Basic Information You Should Know Before Treating Sciatica

Basically, the sciatic nerve is longest and broadest sole nerve in the human body.  It is found running from the lower portion of the back, through the buttocks and down the legs where it divides into several branches.  It supplies signals for the whole legs and the feet.  This is the reason why when the sciatic nerve is being pinched or compressed, the person gets to experience dull, throbbing pain, and stinging sensation that starts off from the back all the way down to the foot until it results to numbness of both legs.  This is usually the effect of the body’s failure to send pain signals from the legs to the brain, leading to a feeling of tingling sensation which makes a person uncomfortable.  When symptoms of sciatica persist with no appropriate management, the person might suffer weakness of both legs and may further deteriorate causing a person to become paralyzed and flaccid.
Among young individuals and adults, sciatica is often caused by prolapsed disc or slipped disc while osteoporosis may be responsible in causing sciatica among older people.  Either of these causes, sciatic nerve becomes compressed where pain is likely to occur.  Commonly, treating sciatica pain is only one-sided and it is most felt in the buttocks and on the back of the thigh.  Pain also can be mild or sever where a person is more likely prone to having muscle spasms.  In some cases, pain is worse when a person moves or exerts force.  Generally, sciatica can easily be treated without having to undergo medical procedures.  Usually, doctors give pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs in order to alleviate the pain and reduce the inflammation of the nerve, respectively.  In addition, it is to be known that sciatica gets better with physiotherapy, massage, exercises and even chiropractic and these will not only provide relief but provide a total banishment of the condition.
